How old is this button?

I went from never finding buttons to popping old ones out seemingly every other hunt lol. Can anyone help tell me what type and how old this one is? Thanks in advance.

Looks like it has a shank. 1800s or earlier, probably. You might try removing some of the crust on the back with a wooden toothpick, so we can see it better. Thanks

Yeah it deff has a shank. When I get home I will try to clean it up.

Great, there may be writing underneath of there.

What's the best way to get that gunk off? It's a rock hard layer of rust it seems. Trying soaking in lemon juice and scraping with a toothpick now but it doesn't seem to be working great.

There's the shank but still a pretty thick layer of crud over the rest of the back.
