I found this pulley on my first metal detecting trip . Found it on land that backed up to a farm that's been around for a very long time. I'm just curious as to how old this could be. It was about 8 inches deep. The pulley is about the size of a softball.

That's a Beautiful old pulley, not sure of age though. My guess would be late 1800's, early 1900's.

Not sure but nice looking pulley

Welcome to Tnet from upstate NY

Nice!!! Congrats!!! Soak it in oil. I bet it’ll still work.

It's locked up pretty good haha. It took a long time and a lot of work to get it how it looks now. When I first dug it up dirt was caked in everywhere. At first I didn't even know it was a pulley. That's how much dirt was on it

This the same pulley when I brought it home. When I dug it. I took a stick to loosen all the dirt in the openings . Then started cleaning process

You cleaned that up very well! Would you mind sharing your process? I have a similar piece I am looking to clean.

At first I knew the pulley was is sound condition. It didn't feel brittle or anything so I took it to work and put the pulley in our shot Peener. This machine throws trillions of sand grain size metal shot at the metal. Virtually cleaning it down to bare metal. I put this piece in for 5 minutes. Came out as you see it. Have to be careful though. If the piece is brittle, you could destroy it. Our shot Peener was $60,000 and you can fit anything up to a recliner chair size item inside it

Very cool find! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Nice find. Nice job on the clean up. Congrats

That is a very nice relic. It cleaned up real well.

I was able to find a photo of it online. Turns out this is an 1800s barn beam pulley. Inside would of had wood in it which would spin. Cool!
