I just came across and read this hilarious 1897 Austin Weekly Statesman article about how treasure fever struck some of the city's most prominent citizens. It tells about a couple of old treasure stories related to Austin's Pease Park area. Austin's County Treasurer even killed himself as a result of catching the fever.
