Detector(s) used
delta 4000 / ace 250 - used BH and many others too
heard on the news last night that the us govt is thinking of switching to steel coins similar to canada to save money -- since a cent coin has two cents of copper in it and a nickle has ten cents of nickle in it --doulble their "face" value -- now if that occurs how in the nanme of god will you be able to tell scrap iron from coins? --- oh boy hope the detector boys have some magic up their sleeves or its back to dig everything -- the only good news is "junk" clad coins will then become collector items I guess.---

I won't matter to me, I'm only digging the old stuff anyway. The new stuff would have a VDI different than silver/nickle/gold. I don't try to dig clad. And, wouldn't steel in the ground rust and register as iron?

Seems today's detectors already have that covered.

oh I hunt the old stuff too -- but for tot lot folks and those who hunt more modern coins --the steel coins --would read as iron wouldn't they? what a nightmare trying to sort steel coins from iron junk bits ---- plusjust like the old silver coins of yesterday overtimecopper amd nickle coins would slowly get weeded out of the normal pocket change --leaving only the steel coins out there ( which are worthless as far as metal value) the steel money would be only worth face value and would break up much like the zinc cents do. ugh they suck.--- Ivan

Wonder what the response would be from the coin-op industry with all the issues steel coins would create with the vending machines?

Small article from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Pennies and nickels may be abolished
The head of the OPM announced that pennies and nickels may be abolished
to free up metals for the war effort.

Nothing really changes

The good news is you'll be able to roll a $30 roofing nail magnet across the park and clean 'em up!
