In the woods behind our house there are hundreds of glass bottles and ceramic bowls. Many of them seem at least a half century or century old, and there are truly hundreds of them. The area is somewhat overgrown with weeds and grass. I am just getting in to metal detecting and I don't know if I should dig them up or not. There is several feet of snow there now, so I'll have to wait until spring to get them. Most of them are extrememly dirty. My question is, Are they worth something and is it worth the effort to dig them all up?

Thanks, JRobinson42

Yes, yes and yes! If for no more than any other reason they are a look back into the history of your property and of the area and times in general that fascinate any tresure hunter who is truly dedicated. They also may prove a source of wealth not counted on as some of those artifacts fetch excellent profits. And yur fellow members here on Tnet will be fascinated by you posting your finds. Monty

JRobinson42, welcome to the forum. 100s of bottles you say? WOW!!!! Let's see some of those things, get out the snow blower and clear off the white stuff. Bottles...we wanna see bottles!!!!

Lol, well once the snow melts I'll get the detector out and dig up the bottles. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the info. I have taken a look at them several times and taken several to take a look at. I was wondering if there is a website or a good resource where I can find info on the bottles. Such as how much they're worth, how old they are, and info on the company. Most of the companies that made the bottles, I have never heard of. Any info somewhat related to that would be great! Thanks again and Good Luck!

THIS is the best website for all kinds of treasures. Check out the other threads on this category and you'll find info about bottles, makers, ages, shapes, etc. But to get you started, here's a thread about bottles: http://www.blm.gov/historic_bottles/

just careful with the old chemist bottles;)

I found a site like that...at least a hundred probably more of very early embossed milk bottles. I couldnt wait to dig them. I was sadden to find all where broken....ALL

Go to the bottle section of this forum. Learn all your can. Use a rake and/or trowel, don't get in a hurry and be careful. Gloves are probably a good idea. As you dig deeper, you go back in time. Like the others said, some of them can be quite valuable. Post lots of pics, of bottles and site. Maybe do some cleaning up around the site before the weeds start growing and the snakes come out :)

There is a thread around here somewhere with some good ideas about cleaning them up. Here is a good site for makers marks on bottles.
Guess where I learned about it .....right here !!!!
