Super find! I once had a bunch of these and sold them on ebay....DUMB! I never even cleaned them. :'(

I sure won't make that mistake again. Large cents are mega finds in any condition.

Personally, I wouldn't even try to "clean it."

Best,

Badger

i dunno...the jury is still out on cleaning it. it is so corroded its not worth much, but the only way to get that corrosion off is to buzz it with electrolysis, and sometimes that makes em even worse! i`ll have to think about it. ::)

Cool Find! Sounds like you guys had a great place to hunt and alot of fun!

As I take a better look at the coin, maybe I would remove some of that surface corrosion. At first it looked mostly like a slug but now I see some pretty decent detail on the obverse side at least.

The problem with these is sometimes they're pitted and cleaned they can even look worse. It's your call.

Let us all know what you decide.

Congrats on the large cent! HH, Mike

Its kinda like fishin. One keeper makes the whole day worth while...Joe

i tried a little elecrolysis on the large cent and it only made it start to look worse. i guess i will have to accept the fact that this one is going to almost be a slug :(. copper doesnt stand much of a chance in the soil around here if its been there a while. oh well.......im happy to dig it anyway!

Great find Hollowpointred. I find that when they are that deteriorated that you are better off not cleaning them. Look like it was in a really wet spot. The copper just doesn't hold up. Congrats...Lance

Coppers are great no matter how they turn up. :)

Hollow,

nice find. Keep it the way it is.

have a good un...........

Way to go, Red. That's an oldie, but goodie. ;)

I'm trying the mineral oil soak on mine.....I'll let you know how it works.

Nice find Hollow regardless of the condition, still lookin' for my first, along with many other first.Congrat's and HH

WOW!! :o thats an amazing difference! where do i get one of these ultrasonic things and how do you use it!? i have quite a few cruddy corroded coppers that need a lot of love!

I think you need to send that coin to me and let me figure out what to do with it. Really congrats on the find. Burdie

i couldnt help myself ::) i figured i had already started cleaning it so i would take a shot at finishing it. heres how it turned out :'( i probably should have let it be but at least i can see a little detail now. its a shame it is so pitted from the corrosion. next time i`ll probably leave it alone, or try the ultrasonic cleaner idea.
