Hello all, I will be heading up to the UP in the next few weeks with my Whites M6.
I hear the soil is pretty mineralized and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to run the M6 in that area.
I plan on bringing a 6X10DD to help with the soil along with the 9.5 standard coil
I have only been at this for a few months now and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don't forget the bug dope, eh? I'm 50 miles n. of Iron Mtountain and if your coming my way give me a heads up and stop by my place on the lake 3 miles from nowhere. I just got permission to hunt an old 1900's homestead taken over by nature and can't wait to get there in a couple of days. My Umax doesn't have a problem with the soil but I'm new too. HH Gene the Author man....

i wouldnt worry about it, im shure the m-6 will run fine, just remember to reground ballance when the machine starts to run funny, when are you heading up?

gene how are the skeeters dooing, last time up the sandflies were pretty bad

It's still bad but it is getting better. Almost to the point where I can stand it in short intervals. Worst I've seen in a long time....

Word of warning......My friend and his father in law and brothers in laws deer hunt up in the U.P. and they have seen cougars up there and I am not saying just once. There have been others I have talked to that have also seen them up there, so if you are going to detect up there I would not go by myself and if you do detect, I would be carrying something. Large knife, pistol, something.

Hi guys, got a brother that lives in Iron Mountain. One thing you might look out for is copper. Seems the biggest deposits of copper in the US come from UP. Becky Whorly on Best Places to Find Cash and Treasures, travel channel did a story on it once.

the north western half has the copper, even though it is in other areas, iron mountian, has alot or iron ore as does the central UP and western end, silver and gold in the central and around the copper country, dont think the east anything. fatherin law saw a couger a couple years back as did i, it jumped off a small cliff and across the road in front of us, i cary my lesche and a hunting knife, but im more worried about the bears, thats why my dog comes along

Saw a black bear there once while driving from wisc. to NY. Freakin bear was huge and was keeping pace with another vehicle right in front of me going about 30 Mph. Besides it's speed did I mention it was huge. What the heck are you Michiginites feedin them dadgum things ? Cause it was Huge ! :o

Hey MD,

We feed dem dar bars Metal Detectorist! HAHAAHA Yeah I saw one once when I was up at Marquette hiking. My friend and I were following a stream and I heard a bear cub cry and I looked across the stream and I saw the cub walking down to the stream and then I saw the mother. All I can say is thank God we were in a tree line and down wind from her because we did not have anything to protect us if she would have come after us. As we were walking slowly and quitely away I was able to get a picture of the mother bear on her hind legs looking around. If I can find that picture, I will post it.

just about hit one on my pedal bike when i was a kid, missed by a couple feet, my brother had one chase him while working on some equipment in the woods, he got nervous and started to run and it followed suit, he jumped in a logging truck, he said all i could hear was feet and heavy breathing

Lookin forward to seein that pic Steve, but based on my one experience above, Pictures just don't do these bears justice for their size.

And Thompy if you can hear the bears breathin that's way to close. :o

My brother in law that has a place in the UP feeds the bears big bags of jelly doughnuts.
He has an old bathtub dug into the ground that he fills up and within a half hour, they come eating.
I would feel better not hunting alone so if anyone is up for a hunt in Birch let me know as I'll be heading up in the next few weeks.

Just let me know Makton, If timing works I'd love to hit Birch. Found it on a map while I was up there last weekend. Sounds like a good time!
