Since our last MD club meeting on March 8th, I've been on a bit of a silver streak, so I set a personal goal to find forty silver coins by the next club meeting on 4/13/10.

I wasn't able to get out as much as I'd hoped this past week (darn rain and family holidays :munky2: ), but I managed to get out for a couple of hours one afternoon last week, and scored silver #38, a 1948 Washington quarter :occasion14:

I went out this afternoon and tried a new spot, it was a hill and tough hunting as it had a lot of brush to weave through to move around, which also limited the amount of ground you could get your coil over, but still it looked like a promising spot. It turned out to be a pretty good spot, as my first target saw light for the first time in my lifetime and silver #39 turned out to be a 1955 silver Roosevelt dime, I thought terrific, I'm almost there. A bit later I got a really nice signal and silver #40 came to life, a 1934 Washington quarter :headbang: Just before I left, I got one last nice signal and unearthed silver #41, a 1939 merc

As I have a week left until the next club meeting, I'm going to try like heck to make my stretch goal of 50 silver coins in a month :happy2:

Wow, I feel sorry for tomarrows hunters.

There won't be alot left to find.

Congrats on your finds!

I scored a 1959 Washington Quarter today (an hour away from home.)

I figure it had been overlooked by past MD'ers or had been dropped w/in the past 10 years (it was only 4" deep.)

It's lucky I didn't nick it. I've gotten so used to digging clad.

Thanks everyone

Jim I only started detecting a bit over two years ago, and I already feel like the old timers have cleaned out 95% of every place I hunt. I hear stories of people hunting popular parks around here were finding tons of silver. They'd head back to their cars at noon, not to eat lunch, but to empty their pockets, and then fill them up again before they went home for the day. Now we're left with scraps, fringe targets that are deep or partially masked, or the occasional gopher give-me they've moved into your park.

I've researched several places in the past, only to hunt them and find that their mostly cleaned out, and then when discussing it with one of the old timers at our club, to be told "oh yeah, that place was great when I hunted it 20 years ago!". It can be a frustrating experience, so to finally find a small virgin site, was not only a long time coming, but a great experience that I hope all newer hunters get the opportunity to experience at least once :headbang:

It's funny (ironic may be a better choice of words), one of the senior detectorists in our club told me after I found my first silver half dollar since I started detecting in February of 2008, and showed it at the last club meeting, that they're easy to find! Yep, he said silver halves are easy to find, just hunt where others have not. Ironically I found two more after that one by doing exactly as he suggested.

It's addicting, now to find that next virgin site :icon_pirat:

Brian
