Anyone recognize this piece?

Apparently brass/bronze. Found VERY deep in a place known for a long history.

I first thought some sort of door/lock plate. But, it just doesn't look sturdy enough.

Any thoughts?

My random guess is:

Internal part of a rifle action.

Am I just seeing things, or is there perhaps a word on the thin strip on the opposite side from the round hole?
