Back on April 26 I found this class ring and posted the pics on treasurenet. I thought a quick call to the school and I would be able to return it. It was a little more complicated than that.

I called the school and the secretary said she would check the yearbook and find the name and call me back on Monday. She called and gave me the name and said all the student records went to the central office and I would have to get phone numbers and info from them. So I called and left a message. Two days later no reply so I call again. This time I get someone and they said they will look it up and call back. They did call back and said they could not give me the info, but they could call and give my number to the folks. That was fine with me so i gave her the number and name. Two more days and no response so I call back. The number they had in the file was no longer in service and they had no other contact info. She suggested Facebook, but I don’t do that. She also suggested I call the town hall and see if anyone remembers the family (small rural town about 11 miles from where I live. Everybody knows everybody else.). I tried that and no luck.

This was starting to get really frustrating. I just want to give this guy his ring back, what to do next? I try googling him and get some possible numbers from the internet. A gave them a try. One was nobody by that name here and the other 2 were no answers so I left a message. No call backs.

At this point I am not sure where to try. Keep in mind this is NOT my first return. I have returned 11 class rings (2 to families of deceased owners) and 12 other pieces of jewelry that I was able to identify the owners for.

The only other thing up I could think of was the newspaper. It has not worked for me in the past, but it couldn’t hurt to try. The paper will run a lost and found ad for 3 days free so I sent them an email and yesterday it appeared in the paper.

Today while I was out swinging the CZ 21 I heard the text signal from my phone. I ignored it because nobody ever texts me. Later I heard the phone ring. No ringtone I recognize so I didn’t answer. I figure if it is important they will leave a voicemail.

After about 3.5 hours of detecting the sky opened up and really poured down the rain so I packed up and went to the truck. I got out my phone to call about an order I wanted to pick up and noticed the missed call. I went to voicemail and there was a message from the man I have been trying to find. I called him back right away and asked about the year of his graduation (which was not in the ad to be sure I have the right person) and he was the right guy.

It turns out that he now lives a long way from where the ring was lost, but his mother in law still lives in the area and saw the ad. He went to the picnic ground it was lost in only once with his father when he was 19 (1979). They played touch football and when he was done his ring was not where he had left it. He thought all this time it had been stolen when in reality it must have fallen into the grass and waited in the ground for 39 years for me to find it.

We have arranged for him to give me a call the next time they visit his mother in law (he says they visit frequently) and we will meet and he will get his ring back. I will update the post when that happens and, with his permission, hopefully post a picture of him with his ring.

Thanks for looking, keep swingin, and may your coil lead you to good things.:hello:

Fantastic! Giving the hobby a good name.

Awesome story. Congrats on the find and the outcome.

Great (and unnecessary) effort on your part. You'd think you were asking for their medical records, social security and bank account numbers and passwords!
