I found a 1912 nickle in the field i was looking for arrow heads in

Being that by your description it is well worn just clean it with some soap and water.

Yea ... It was laying in a field for who knows how long? It has green patina on it, but it's red under the green patina. Is that common?

1912 is not an uncommon date, but you'll want to check for an 'S' mint mark before you get to cleaning it. If there's no 'S' I'd say clean as much as you like. If there's an 'S' I'd recommend not cleaning it. 1912 'S' is rare and valuable is basically any identifiable condition.
