I have been hitting alot of fields this fall, with the lack of rain,it is about the only place to hunt in this area.
I have seen a big decline in my coin finds with field hunting, but with all the interesting relics I have unearthed I can adjust to that,a yard hunt seems somewhat less appealing nowadays,I guess I am just a sucker for a twisted pieces of copper or piece of harmonica,or the always abundant organ reed....

Sunday I made a couple of fantastic recovery's,some of you that venture over to the big pond may have seen the items already, but this is for the ones that don't.Just goes to show, you just never know whats down there...and even in Illinois you can dig up some great history....Enjoy and HH thanks Scott

Nice belt buckle! Were these found in Southern IL?

Yep Gimme,Southern Illinois
Still cant believe it myself.
Guess though we shouldnt be to suprised to find a few CW relics here
Illinois had over 200,000 soldiers in the CW
I believe it ranked 3rd or 4th overall of soldiers involved.
So goes to reason, should be alot in the ground here....
thanks for the reply...

Only did one field hint - had a blast!!! You are right, they are fun!

congrats on your relics and half dime , wtg!

Who needs coins when you have finds like that, although that half dime is awesome. Great hunting down there.

Hey Soupie - not only did we have many Union soldiers but we also had Camp Douglas which held thousands of Confederate prisoners. ILL has alot of CW history but sometimes you have to really search for it because the battlefield history gets more attention. The closest CW relic I have found was a Union Metallic Cartridge rimfire bullet but I have no idea if it is actually from the 1860s.

HH! Keep finding the good stuff.

Man I'd give my left set of batts to find one of those buckles!

Great dime too!

Thanks guys for all the replies

If any of you northerns are ever down south of I-70 and need a place to hunt, give me a shout....

Will do Soupie. I visit Shelbyville a few times a year. May still come down in November to close up the cabin... if so, I'll let you know. Are you close to Shelby County?

Congrats on your finds. Illinois does have "war" history. Last week my detecting partner & I were working a field where a house once stood, & he dug a uniform button from the war of 1812 !! Talk about a shocker for this area.

Thanks Trezurehunter, lots of history here,my next goal is to hunt an old french settlement,Circa 1703....
