did you have a coal furance at one time? still looks like a big bread pan (professional type) --I worked as a cook onboard ship and we used slightly smaller ones that look just like it --- Ivan

I don't think there was a wood or coal furnace here although there could have been, I know the house is at least 70 to 80 years old or older because the bricks that make up the walls in the basement stopped being made in the 1930's. My dad bought the house and I pay him rent, he has all the papers on it's history at the County Courthouse or in his saftey deposit box, I have asked him if I could look at them but he is not interested in the history so he does'nt see the point of getting them out for me to look at.

I don't ever recall seeing an ash pan that small,I've emptied a lot of them in my lifetime.

The stains on the outside of the pan are reminiscent of the baked on carbon on cookie sheets and bread pans.The size is right for a large bread pan.The ends are folded in the same manner as my breads pans.The sides and ends are tapered for removing the loaf from the pan.It appears to be tin plated as are my older pans.I vote for it being a bread pan.

tony thanks for the photo ---as I have said all along a big bread pan (professional type heavy duty)---some hard core home bakers had em in the old days too --- most folks don't cook much less bake these days sadly --- Ivan
