I was blanked on halves yesterday so I still had the $1,000 in my pocket. My wife and I took a road trip to a town I hadn't half hunted in before. Stopped at a Credit Union first, no halves at all. Next I went to a bank where a friend of mine works. I've asked her about halves but she didn't think they had many. She isn't one of the tellers so she doesn't really work with the change. They had a $500 bag from the counting machine and a partial bag in the machine. Bank policy is they can't remove a bag from the machine until it's full so I was happy to get the full bag. She is also going to find out if they can order me boxes without a fee.

Next bank the teller said they didn't have any loose halves but they had rolls. She said she didn't know how many they had so I said I could take up to $500 worth and she went and got me all I wanted. I'm not sure how many more they had. I was very happy to get my $1,000 worth at only 2 banks. The town has 5 more banks to visit so I will be making some more hunting trips there.

My wife and I went through the bag of loose halves and I am happy to say I found my first ;D 1987-P :D. I also found 1 64, 1 66, 2 67s, and 5 68-Ds. The bag wasn't looked through or re-counted before I got it and there was a lot of interesting stuff in it

Now the bad news and advice I need. The $500 bag only had $457 worth of halves in it. I know the machines aren't perfect and I expect to end up a dollar or two +/-, but this is quite a bit short. Even with the extra change in it I'm $38.32 in the hole. Has anyone had a bag come up this short? There of course is no way for me to prove the bag was short since I took it home. Do the tellers usually recount the bag before you take it? This is the bank where my friend works so we were talking and I never thought about having them recount the bag. I'm going to let her know the bag was short and give the key back in case they are missing it.

I still have the $500 in rolls to go through. Some are white and shotgun rolled at both ends. Others are brown and rolled at one end but folded and taped at the other so they may be someone else's rejects.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

I had something similar happen to me today as well.

I went to a bank that I hadn't been to in while to buy the halves they had,I called ahead to know how much $ to withdraw from my bank to bring to buy the halves with. They said they had $72.50,seven rolls and 5 loose coins,I said I would be in shortly to pick them up and she said they would be waiting for me to arrive.

When I got there I handed her $73.00 and she gave me the rolls and went to another teller to get the 5 loose coins, during this time I measured the rolls against each other to check if they were full as I usually do because I get shorted often for some reason and one of the rolls had 1 more coin than the others so I figured it was overfull ($10.50) and when I counted it quickly I realized it had 1 coin extra(also noticed 3 64's and 2 67's ;D) so I was exited,I quickly put them back in the wrapper and now that I knew the others were ALL full I waited for her to return with the 5 loose halves.

Well during this time the manager walks over to see what's going on(To PRY/METTLE) and say's they have to count each roll make sure the count is exact(stupid waste of customers time I thought) and so I said I trust that they are full and will take them as-is.She said it's their policy to ensure accuracy and that it was in my best interest to have the count EXACT.Also that I couldn't take them without having this done.So my only choice was to AGREE to the recount or walk away with nothing :'(.

I figured with the small amount (7 rolls) that they would count them on the counter in front of me and I would just sweat bullets for a few minutes hoping they didn't know about silver and I would be on my way shortly. No such luck-she (the manager) starts to pick up the rolls and walk away with them,I said excuse me,can't we count those right here? She say's they can't take up time counting them out here because they have to be available for other customers tranactions (I was the last in line and there was one other available teller already).

To make a long story short they take like 10 mins back there "Counting" them and when they return they bring them in a canvas bag with the torn wrappers in the bag with the NOW loose coin and say here you go all counted and bagged for you(saying it like they did me a favor).I asked was it $72.50?She said yes.I knew it was least $73 because of the extra half I had noticed already.

Before I walked out I quickly checked in the bag to see how much silver was in there and immediately found 1 of the 67's I had seen before and a 69 in the 1st handfull I pulled out so I figured I was in for a big score!

I left there and although I couldn't wait to go through all of them I had to rush out of there to get to another bank before it closed, when I get to that bank they tell me I can't buy their halves because I don't have an account(I have been here several times before and could buy anthing I wanted without an account but now I am refused)So I said I would open the account right now but they wouldn't let me because it was too close to closing time and they wanted to get started on their weekend :-[.So I said could I just buy them this time because I waited so long in line and that I would come back to open an account another day. They said NO and started getting real short with me so I knew it was time to leave.

Anyway, back to the original story,I am now home and dump the bag to see all of the goodies I got for my effort's only to find no more silver.

I am now thinking where's my 3 '64's and other 67 and the rest of the silver that I was sure was in the other rolls?

I immediately sort them into $10 piles and only have 5 complete piles and 1 partial >:(,all tolled I ended up with $59.50!

They shorted me $14.00,and the fact that the '64's were among the missing I knew ALL of the missing was SILVER!

They took my $73 and gave me back $59.50 loose.

And for those of you wondering why the '67 and '69 were in the bag.I thought the same thing and all I could come up with was they must have missed them because the were only looking at the edges-these 3 coins are 40% silver but have bright copper edges.I got $3 worth of silver for $13.50

So with all the bad luck I have been having lately with not being able to get boxes anymore and finding so many peoples reject rolls,I have one more thing to add to the "bad experiences while CRH" part of my life :-\.

This bank is closed on saturday So I will have 2 whole day's to try to figure out how I am going to deal with this.Any suggestions? :'(

Wow, what rotten deal Schramm! I wouldn't have left that window without counting the halves in front of them, telling them you get shorted a lot on bags and it's just "your policy."

It's no secret that banks are getting hip to all the half hunting, but that's outright fraud and theft! Not sure how to handle it since it's your word against theirs, but I'd make them your dump bank in a NY minute.

This is one of the worst injustices I've heard yet, better luck in the future Schramm.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

I'm sorry to hear that the bank shorted you that much money! :( The only advice I can give it to go back Monday and ask to speak with the manager. Or if the person that counted the coins and to tell them they miscounted and how much you are short. They probably won't do anything in your favor but you don't know if you don't try. Also if they don't return the money they shorted you, I would be very direct and tell them that you opened one roll while you were waiting and tell them about the amount of silver coins that you saw in the rolls and that it had been removed when they returned the bag to you. If they still don't do anything about it, call the main office and talk to the district manager and make a complaint against them. They need to be aware of how people are being treated and ripped off!

Let me share the few things that happened to me the last few days while crh. I purchased $24.00 in cents from a bank last week and of course searched the rolls that evening. Ten dollars worth of cents were all coroded with salt, pitted with holes and basically no person, store or bank would want them. I guess the teller accepted them and of course had no idea what was in them, also almost every roll was a few cents short. I was going to drive back to the bank to tell them, but it was quite a distance away and I just didn't want to waste gas,so I deceided to dump them into a Coinstar machine to see if it would accept any of them. At this point I did't mind loosing .09 cents per dollar. I cashed in $4.50 in the Coinstar and I tumbled $2.00 worth and rerolled them and took them to the bank. I still have about $2.00 or so to try to tumble to see if I can clean them up enough to take back to a bank.

Then today I went to purchase coins at a local bank, they have been very nice to me the last three weeks that I have stopped in and I was lucky to find a lot of silver halves at this bank. Today I purchased dimes and cents from this bank. The teller was counting the dimes and said he had $395.00 in dimes originally, but when he recounted I said did you get the roll that you dropped earlier and he said no. He had counted 19 rolls + the dropped roll should have made 20 rolls for the last tray(20 rolls of dimes per $100 tray). So I said if there are 20 rolls in that last tray then that makes $400.00 total not, $395.00. I didn't want him to be short. So he emptied all of the trays into my bag. I got home and recounted the rolls and of course I am one roll short. He didn't count it correctly the second time, he was right the first time and I'm out $5.00. So I searched the dime rolls today and there was $1.10 short (total) from all of them. So I was less than thrilled about what happend today. lol I'm going to call the bank tomorrow to find out if that teller is working and if his drawer came up $5.00 over,if they will return it. Most likely I'm out the $5.00 and learned a lesson, never let the teller dump the coins in your bag for you, whether they are trying to be nice or not. Double or triple count the coins yourself! I did find quite a few keepers today, will post later.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

I learned the other day to always count your coins at the bank in front of them no matter how long it takes.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

I'm sure this is going to turn out to be an expensive lesson.

schramm - your story is definitely worse than mine. You didn't lose as much money, but where mine was just a mistake that no one thought to recheck the machines count you were outright robbed.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

Fropa, I would take the loss as part of the game, keep the relation with the bank friendly.
schramm, I would go back to the bank and let them know they have a thief working there, they need to know.

Whenever I get the opportunity to buy a bag, if the teller's are hesitant due to the fact that the count may not be correct, I tell them that I realize that and its part of the risk I take when buying the bag and that I won't complain if its off. Which I never have.

Other than cent bags which I occasionally get more due to nickels/dimes/quarters getting into it, I have typically been shorted a little due to foreign objects in the bag. Either foreign coins, misc tokens, keys, etc. That's why I typically don't buy bags of nickels, dimes, or quarters unless I have some idea of the machines accuracy by trying cents there first. Halves I am willing to take the risk due to the possibility of a good payback. So far, I have only lost money (if you count the value of the silver gained) on one bag and it was like $4. There may have been others as well, but when I verified the count, that is the worst I had.

Some places will only sell it if they rerun it through the machine which only gets rid of some of the misc. Usually the lower denom stuff gets sorted correctly the second time.

Occasionally, when they recount the bag the total changes. Whenever that happens I ask if they removed anything, foreign coins, objects, etc. just to see what they say. And if they say foreign coins I ask if I can see them cause I have interest in them. To date, I have had no issues like what was mentioned above. I agree that is outright theft and should be reported, at least to the branch manager unless it was the branch manager who insisted on the recount in secret. In which case I would report it higher up.

Since it will end up a he said/she said case, if they normally charge fees for ordering boxes of halves, maybe you can work out a compromise where they would order 5-10 (or let them put the limit on it) "sealed" boxes for you free of charge to make up for it or something like that. If you think of some way to resolve the issue before you get there, it "may" help you in any discussions that occur.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

GMan00001, I do like the idea of being able to get the bag without anyone having looked through it. A few dollars off wouldn't be too bad but $38 is a fair chunk to lose. I want to buy the next bag they fill, but I hope there isn't an employee there like at schramm's bank and $43 in silver was removed from the bag before I got it. I do want to remain friendly with the bank and be able to buy more coins and possibly start getting a weekly box from them.

The rolls from the other bank were like I expected. The taped rolls were all rejects, but the white rolls produced 8 40% keepers. I'll go back Tuesday and see how many more I can get.

Re: I need advice on todays road trip

I agree that is a lot to be shorted. I sometimes get shorted at the coin return machine. But I have found quite a bit left in the return, as well a few times when it jammed they let me have whats in the tin tray. so, Ive probably come out ahead. Also, one time while the machine was open I saw dollar bills in the ti tray. Some one actually thought the coin machine took dollars as well!! :D

A few weeks ago I got a bag full of rolled pennies and 5 rolls, in penny wrappers, were all dimes!

I went to the bank today and talked to my friend about being $43 short. I took a container with all the non-half items in it so she could see what the machine was throwing in with the halves. I figured that even if I didn't get any money back they would know they need to take a look at the machine. Well, she made a call and vouched for me saying she knows I wouldn't make up the fact I was short. She kept all the non-money items but got me my $43 dollars and also told me to keep the extra change that was in the bag. I went from a $38 loss to a $5 profit. I doubt it would have went that smooth if I wouldn't have known somebody there. I also let them know I want to buy the next bag when it's full (Just over $200 in it right now).

I also stopped at another bank that had $130 in halves. The teller told me that a few people come in and buy halves to search and then bring them back. She said if I was looking for certain halves I probably wouldn't find any. I bought them anyway and ended up with 2 40%, a 66 and a 67. Either sloppy searchers or these rolls had not been searched yet.
