We did a lot of that in the 60s when we were kids. A neighborhood curmudgeon told us it was a federal offense for defacing Govt property and that the railroads were under federal jurisdiction. What a Buzz Kill!
We just did it further on down the line, where he couldn’t see us. Thanks for posting. 🚂

Also, a small galvanized nail make a great G.I. Joe knife, after the train flattens it. LOL

Put salt on the tracks next. The cows will go to lick it and the train will have to stop. Then you can rob the train. Apparently it's still a death penalty offense to put salt on the tracks in some places due to the laws from the 1800's still being on the books, I doubt this applies to coins though, unless they're particularly salty coins.

I had no idea. That’s interesting. Thanks

Apparently you can get in a lot of trouble for that, if somebody wanted to pursue it. If unfortunately you did get caught and somebody decided to cite you for it, I'm pretty sure the judge would say "I used to do that. Don't do it again. Case dismissed" I put a ten penny nail on the track once and it came out pretty cool. Mostly up here is don't get anywhere on the railroad tracks or ROW, cause they're posted.

Like most people, I've done it. I've got a couple of Indian head and a couple of early wheat pennies that I've found while detecting here in my town. They were no doubt run over by steam locomotives way back when as they are not squished nearly as much

Great memories! I used to put copper pennies on the railroad track a block and a half from my house back in the 1950's! Wish I had some of those in my possession now! :headbang:

When I was a kid, I used to play in the old coal bins ... made great slides! One day I saw the remains of a hobo who decided to lie on the tracks. It wasn't nearly as pretty as the smashed coins! "Scared me for life" as the old saying goes and I never went back.

Aww man mo-jo... you should have used something other than that 1943 s copper penny.

:)
