I think i found the worlds smallest Axe!

With no places to hit this morning i decided to do a little door knocking. First house and two hours later this little puppy found its way to the surface. It was about 10 inches down. I also found a US Mail lock about a foot from the axe. Any ideas on how old the axe is and what it may have been used for?

Well I've had Roman Votive Axes way smaller than that massive example. About 2 inches including the shaft.

Anyways pretty cool mini version.

I would like to say "Leprechaun". Which were known of course to stow away on Irish immigrant ships during the mid to late 1800's, and established hidden communities all along the Eastern seaboard. That would be my story and I'd be sticking to it. Of course..........I COULD be wrong. That is one neat little (no play on words intended) find.

That axe is a subject for research.
I guess the lock was used on mail bags??

Nice finds. I think the ax may have been used for chopping toothpicks for kindling wood ! That is a tiny one.

Thanks for the leads everyone...lol indeed it is small. The more i look at it the more i think its not a toy. i have knocked a little rust off it and its about to go into the electrolysis bath.
Here is a picture of it on a cutting mat to give it a little more scale.
Looks to be about 2.5 inches long end to end by a 1 1/4 blade.

It is possible that if the back is around 3/4 X 3/4 it is a hardie cut off that goes into a drift hole on an anvil. Used to cut hot material off by striking against it. Sometimes they have a handle attached and a hole drifted in it then used to make marks in hot steel or even cut off hot steel. i have a small one that is used to make fuller marks is the reason I thought of it. Electrolysis might give up its secret.
