Had a chance to get out today went to a very early spot that I know goes back to the early 1800s because it’s where I found my 1809 eight reales. It’s a hard place to hunt so are usually find at least one thing good and this just teases me when I find it when I’m in my truck going home when I get home looking under the magnifying glass robin it with your thumbs anything you Gotta do to see something and you get nothing uggggh image-2020-09-04-16:42:31-063.webp

Smaller than a quarter but thicker. It’s funny how your imagination runs wild and I’m thinking this is my first copper!! Lol

I hope it is your first copper. In the second pic it looks like a rust spot, my first instinct was a knockout. That maybe too modern for your site though.

That's crazy... you've got an 8 reales and not one old copper!

Hope you can ID it.

It sure looks like an early copper to me! Check your measurements on the coin against what's in the books to get a better ID. And don't feel bad, lots of the ones we find are gone...

I know why you're rubbing it like that, it has 3 nipples on one side.[emoji2]just had to say that, sorry I know it's a family friendly forum. Hope with some electrolysis it turns out to be something.

I would be happy just trying to figure it out...win or lose. Nice find:thumbsup:

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

No sure what 'copper' you think it is, but looks like a blank coin to me.

Give it the old cider vinegar or olive oil treatment to at least get an ID. Of all my big coppers I’ve found I only have one I couldn’t ID

I kind of agree. Since there's very little to lose. I'd try some *cold* peroxide for a while. Then...if nothing? Escalate to harsher methods.

Before you start though, take some solid measurements! Diameter, thickness, weight.
They might help.

BTB...in my experience? I've found that rubbing does nothing but sandpaper the details that are left.

You're welcome to borrow my "Nuclear, Electrolysis, Microwave, Ultrasonic, Chemical Powerwashing, Pressure cooking, Annealing furnace, acid bathing, Cleaning machine.

I hate mystery coins because the only way to find out what they are is to destroy them with some harsh method. Most of my coins I just throw them in some CLR since I’m CA you won’t find anything old or valuable. I’m sure your next find will be better, good luck out there Truth.

People have found reales in CA. I mean the chances of us finding anything REALLY good or old aren’t great. But they are out there. There were Spanish missions and adobes as far north Santa Rosa and Sonoma. Though I guess even then it was still just the early 1800s. We obviously had plenty of gold coins in the state. I’ve even heard of people finding reales with Chinese chop marks on the beach in northern ca.
