time after time Ive seen that magic number 6inch's of depth why should this be Ive think I may have it.

The common earth worm generation after generation of worms moving objects about at millimetres a year normally upwards what do you think.

Depends on the region. We get frost heaves down to 16" that really turbulate our soil - and the park I most often detect goes under water in the spring for some silt and river gouging that REALLY mess with the soil. The fairground section was under 12 FEET of water last June. Changed everything. I dug a 1996 Roosevelt dime at 8" in that park that had me all excited for a bit.

"Gonna be silver! Gonna be silver!" NOT!

I don't think an earthworm has the power to push a coin up thru the soil, and if so, why wouldn't it push it on to the surface?
My two bits.

I don't think the woims actually move the coin... they aerate, and kinda fluff the soil, above, or below it, causing it to move... in addition to root growth and general decomposition processes...

Dug a 4" coin just the other day and was surprised that 6 earthworms surfaced and were heading back and forth as I fished for the coin...

I shoulda just quit then, and went fishin!
