Ok, first I have to tell you all that I originally joined up here at Tnet for information and friendly exchanges with respect to metal detecting. However, since joining, I've found Tnet to not only be a great MDing web site but so much more. Tnet is really a community in cyberspace made up of really wonderful people, most of whom posses a vast amount of experience and knowledge and are willing to pass that knowledge on to others. It is a truly fun and informative site. To that end, being schooled and enlightened by others, is where my story begins.
I had never really heard of coin roll hunting before Tnet and I will tell you up front that I thought it was impossible to come up with silver halves from a bank, I mean surely the bank employees must go through the rolls themselves, at least so I thought. Skeptical, but obviously intrigued by the notion, I decided to try roll hunting for myself. I went out to several banks and purchased whatever rolls I could find. It worked out to about $120.00 and I only ended up with one silver half. One measly coin but perhaps the best coin I'll ever find, because had I not found that 1964 Kennedy I would have chalked up the whole prospect of roll hunting as poppycock!
Today, after work, I headed out to find some new MDing locations. I scoped out several areas but didn't do any actual hunting today. As I was comming home, stopped at a red light, I spotted, what I thought appeared to be a very old looking bank, and thought to myself perhaps that would be the type of bank I might have some luck in. I turned the corner on the green light and pulled over to go in. I asked the teller if she might have any rolls of half dollars, she replied that she didn't but knew that another of their branch locations had just got a bunch turned in from a customer. I thanked her and went off on my way. I was on the fence as to wether, or not, it would be worth the bother to ride down the road to the other branch, thinking to myself It's probably one of those fellas on Tnet turning in one of their boxes of coins. Of course curiosity got the best of me and I went to the other branch. They told me an older gentleman had just recently turned in a bunch of halves and how many did I want. I asked how many they had and she replied $88.00. I thought to myself thats odd, I mean their in 10 dollar rolls how is she getting 88 dollars, but I told her I'd take them all. Then, when I reached for my money, I remembered I had made several purchases during the day and it turned out that I only had $86.00 on me. The coins were not rolled but were instead in a large manila envelope. I told the teller I only had 86 dollars not the 88 and could she take two dollars out of the envelope for me. She proceeds to pull out four halves and I could see two of them were Franklin's! I asked if she wouldn't mind pulling out some different ones instead and so she reached in again, but still one of the coins, as I could tell from the rim, was a silver half. So I asked her, gently, if she wouldn't mind allowing me to select the fours coins I didn't want. She kindly allowed me to that and turning all of the coins over to me. I quickly pulled out four obvious clad halves, thanked her and speedily made my way back to my car. I knew I had some good ones in the envelope. I sorted out the coins in the car. I had about $50.00 in clad coins, just over $20.00 in 40% silvers and the rest, as shown below, were silver halves. Now I know this may go against the grain of some of you out there, but I personally don't get tickled over the 40% coins. So I turned them back in along with the clad coins between two other banks. I am admittedly hooked now. I just feel great about todays finds. Hopefully I will have continued luck and I truly do wish all of you good luck as well.
