Today was the first real day I've been able to get out and hunt since the "weird" hunt last weekend. It was nice to be out in the cooler weather. The wildflowers are blooming and the mosquitos are down.

After about an hour, I got a good signal that by the display numbers I thought would be a dime. It was deep enough to be silver, and I was looking forward to a nice silver dime. I cut the plug, but the coin pinpointed off to the side, and the shovel hit it. :( I didn't know it until I used the probe and found it hiding in the side of the hole. Much to my surprise, it was a Barber quarter I had butchered! :BangHead: When that happened, I had a brain lapse and instinctively rubbed the face of it once to get the dirt off, figuring that I had already whacked it anyway. Then I came to my senses and put some water on it. :-\

So, here she is, and in the interest of full disclosure, front and back views. Scratched or not, I'm happy to have her! :)

Thanks for checking out my "winged" bird, and HH this weekend!

'Tis better to have found and gouged, than never to have found at all.

Where are you hunting where the mosquitoes are down? They were in full force last weekend, we got eaten alive.

Nice BBQ! I've only gotten one silver quarter this year, kinda lame, and hoping for at least one more. I'm looking forward to getting together with you guys in the fall to hunt some woods!!

GREAT FIND SORRY ABOUT THE GOUGE !! :-\

Last time I did that it took two Dammitols to get over it and move on. They say you never really get over it though. You know, they say that.

Yep, the skeeters are back with a last stab for the season this week. Gotten three praying mantis' this week also. Or is it preying manti'?

Nice quarter!

WTG on the BBQ.....

Look on the bright side... It's silver....It's not an 1800's.... and most importantly IT"S NOT A 1901S.....

It's a nice keeper and that what counts....Plus it looks like it was a beautiful day and area to hunt....

your small drought is over....

Scratched or not it will look mighty fine in your treasure chest buddy!!!! :icon_pirat:

Yeah, we all nick 'em once in a while. I hit my Morgan on the edge too but forgot ::) to mention it then...

I would love to find my first BQ Neil, even if it came out stuck to the point of my digger!

She's a beaut !!!

Even with the nick it is a great coin. Congratulations

We have ALL done that Kimsdad...........Just consider it a learning experience and put it behind you buddy.....I know it hurts but,if it keeps you from gouging your first 1901s,or 1916 d merc, wouldn't you say the learning experience was worth it............I LOVE those Barber Q's.....Congrats

Beautiful picture Neil! And that's a great BBQ! I'm still looking for one myself. I scratched my very first Merc, and it was AU. Luckily, I found another VF-40 / AU Merc about 4 silvers later... but I will still be digging my holes large when I can. If you see a chocolate birthday cake next to me, it's not edible. J/K... I don't go that big, but big enough to get some digging room around the coin. I usually don't pinpoint, but when I start scratching them I try to pinpoint more often.
