This one should be alot easier for you experts than the last one I posted :).

I found this silver thimble at a former girls academy in Washington County New York. The academy dates well into the 1800's, mid 1800's or earlier. The silvermark appears to be that of Simons, Brothers, & CO. and according to the internet it began thimble production in the 1840's. The silvermark on mine seems to be a variant of the one pictured on American Silver Marks, so I was hoping one of you folks had a book that would narrow down the production date on this one.

Any help is appreciated, and a big thank you to all who helped out on my last ID.

Sorry, I can't help dating the thimble. But that's in really nice shape. It has a lot of nice detail. It looks a little out-of-round but that can be straightened out. Great find!

Can't help much, but I do know that Simons Bros. & Co. began using this mark (Gothic "S" within an upturned bell or shield) in 1888, and officially registered it in 1907. It has remained in use ever since. Here's a link to more info about the company:

http://www.simonsbrothers.com/home.htm

They can probably identify the pattern and supply a date for it.

Quote " Unfortunately, there is no way to date a USA silver thimble. We know which makers made thimbles between what years but that is about as close as you can come to determining the age of a thimble. We know that KMcD made thimbles from 1832-1932, Goldsmith Stern 1890-1933, Webster 1880s-1950 and Simons from 1839 to the present and are still in business And this is just a few. Some thimbles have patent dates on them which helps to determine the age somewhat and still others are sometimes inscribed in the cartouche a special year when the thimble was given as a gift. I am sorry I could not be of more help. "

dont know if that helps
