IDX Classic SL and the Florida beach???

I have been told i can use my IDX on the beash in the wet send and it works great?
i tried it but got tons of bad ghost beeps...what am i doing wrong?...
went with the local club to a beach and found a gold ring in the dry sand....
can anyone help me on this..
