IHP, a Thimble, and a Thingy. What's the Thingy?

I found these Sunday at a 1918 site. The penny is 1896 and the thimble is engraved with "Sterling" on the side. I do not have a clue what the handle-looking item is. I have found a number of them over the years. Made of heavy brass, it resembles a removable pot handle, but I think it might have something to do with machinery used in either the turpentine industry or lumber industry or both. Any help on identifying this object would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

That is absolutely amazing! Thanks for the links DCMatt. Tpmetal nailed it. I have found old US Army bridle parts at these sites, and I suspect they were bought surplus in bulk. Tents and accessories were probably the same. Thanks for all the help you guys.

Unfortunately, they are post Civil War, but always fun to find anyway.
