Ike Dump

I went to the bank today to pick up a roll of pennies for my wife. Naturally having made a relationship with my local bank I asked if they had any Ikes in and to my surprise they said that they had just gotten some in. I told them I would take them all to which they asked if I was sure. I was thrown for a loop with this since usually it’s only a few at a time, so I asked how many they had. She proceeded to tell me that a gentleman had just brought in a collection of them a few days ago and they had $1152 worth of them. Knowing my wife would hate me if I got them all without her permission I bought $50 and went back to the car where she was waiting. I plopped the 50 in her lap and told her that they had 1K more. She yelled at me for not getting them the first time. We proceeded to go back in and were escorted to the vault area to do some extra paperwork signing. After purchasing we took them home to begin the grueling process of going through and sorting by year. We got the all sorted by year but then my wife had to go to work and forbid me from processing them any further till she got home. Here is what we have so far. Sadly we did not find any 73s but we have not checked for any silvers yet. I will update with more after she gets home and we break them down by mint marks.

All 1973 Ike Dollars were only available in collector sets. San Fran made the Blue Pack and Brown Ikes in 40% silver and the traditional clad proof available in proof sets. Philly and Denver produced their share that was only sold in mint sets. You have to keep in mind how mint sets were sold back then. It isn't like today where you can order proof/mint sets up till Dec. 31 of a given calendar year. They were produced in the Spring and collectors had to buy them either in person at the various mints or you had to go through snail-mail and submit an order. After ordering interest waned, the mint would cut-off all future orders and destroy all unsold coins.

A silver Ike (Blue pack or Brown) contains about a third of an ounce of silver so approximately $5/Ike in silver value alone. Of course, you really can't buy them at that price as there were numerous errors/varieties with the silver Ikes. A hunter would gladly buy up every single silver Ike at $5/each for the prospects of having a coin worth a couple hundred. When dealing with the clad '73 Ikes, it is all a matter of condition. A deeply struck with lots of luster from Denver is expected. If you could find the same coin with the same attributes from Philly, it is like the holy grail. Philly churned out crap.

For MS63 expect around $15. For MS65 expect around $50. Higher grades expect Moon Money (from a couple hundred to thousands).
