I'm back! With some cool finds, and a first!

Hello everyone. It's been a year or more since I've been active on this site, due to my decision to enlist into the WV Army National Guard as a 68W Combat Medic. I shipped off last summer, and have since completed basic training and AIT and have finally returned home. I've had the chance to swing my trusty Tesoro on a few different occasions. Dad and I decided to give our usual hunting grounds a break. We visited a spot not too far from home that Dad had been to one time back in the 80s. On that one trip his detector wasn't cooperating, so he could only watch as his detecting partner pulled silver left and right. Soon after, the land changed hands and they could no longer hunt there. Luckily we were able to get back on the property a few weeks ago. So far we've pulled six coins: 4 wheaties, my FIRST Buffalo, and a piece of scrip. I'll put pics of some of the coins up, let me know what you all think! As for the Buffalo, I believe it to be a 1918. I will post an edited pic with the date traced for comparison. I didn't even have to dig for it. I found it laying on top of the ground at the base of a tree! Anyone else ever have this happen? It just seems odd that it didn't sink like everything else (the property was in use from the early 1900s to the 1930s). The scrip was totally unexpected, but it's an awesome find. I cant quite make out what coal company it is from. The only things that are legible is the number 1, for penny, and the name 'Ingle-Schierloh Co. Dayton OH' on the reverse. After some research, I found that this company manufactured scrip for the coal companies. It's interesting because you can see that the 'L' was punched after the lettering was printed on, because the letters 'o' and 'n' in Dayton are punched through.

I look forward to returning to this place so I can hopefully end my 6 year silver drought....

Good luck to all, and happy hunting!

RR

WELCOME BACK! :icon_thumleft: :hello: Love your buffalo nickel -- it's my fave coin from my childhood in 40's & 50's, but I haven't yet dug my first buffalo. As to finding old surface coins, my best & oldest silver coin is the 1923 Peace Silver Dollar that I eyeballed on surface of a rough city lot with old foundations, which my son & I have detected often. The dollar was dusty, looking like an old poker chip, but was totally on the surface! I know that sometimes ground squirrels & such creatures may drag coins up from underground. HAVE FUN & MAY YOUR SILVER DROUGHT END IN A SILVER STREAK SOON! Andi
