I'm freaking out man. Did I dig a 55 or 59 wheatie?

Went out today for a quick afternoon hunt at a nearby farmstead. Been swinging roughly 45 minutes when I hit a real nice hi tone on my garrett at pro. Dug and out pops a penny. Threw it in the bag. It's was one of 3 pennies I found today. Took the pennies home and after a short bubble bath cleaning I gazed upon the coin and noticed the coin had the " ears of wheat " style back. These coins were last struck in 1958, thus anything minted thereafter would be a practical original. Turned it over and noticed it was a 1959! Or a 1955.......anyway I'm having trouble reading the date and I need your alls fine input. Did I find a rare, possibly only the second in existence 1959 wheatie? Or is it a standard 1955???? Ps: I stopped cleaning and snapped some pics using my jewelers eye. The last image being the wheat style back. image.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webpimage.webp

59 wouldnt be a wheatie so it must be 55... nice!

I agree! No wheats were made in 1959 EXCEPT PERHAPS one known to exist. In your opinion, does the date look like a 55 or 59?

Strange though. It does kind of look like a 1959... I guess nothing is impossible.

Hmmm, you learn something new every day. I never knew the first one was in existence. Hard to tell, but I actually think you have a 1953.

Can you take a pic so the coin is facing up right; kind of hard to tell with my head at 90 degrees.

I think there was a story in Numismatic News where one sold last year even though no firm would certify it. Seems like it went for something like $21,000 (I'm going off memory). I believe it is called a "Mule Cent".

Open the image in a new link, the new link shows upright

That's no 5... :icon_scratch: I'm thinking 1950 with a small 0, but sure looks like a 9... :dontknow:

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

Very cool! It looks like the nines are two different styles.

I think it's a '53

Was the coin cleaned? looks like 1959..

Cleaned very lightly. Suds bath and a light brush. I realized its potential worth and stopped. I'm terrified to attempt electrolysis.

Well, it could well be just my poor ole eyes. But, in the extreme magnification pics the lower left "corner" of the last digit appears to have a consistent edge/corner to it. I can see why a nine could be seen. But, the nine doesn't have a "corner" in that spot. My take? 55 or maybe 53.

But, that's all I can guess using the pictures here.

Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for replies! Keep em coming! 55 or 59?

Ha! I want to believe it's a 59!

Looks like 59 to me!
