I'm not "LION" !!!

Found in the backyard of a 200 year old colonial home. With the input of our friend's under "What Is It?" looks to be some sort of small door knocker (with the ring missing) or even a small ornamental side handle to a chest, etc.

I think it's a fountain spout. If it held a ring in it's mouth, wouldn't the mouth be closed? Is there any discoloration below the mouth?
