I'm stumped..

I thought this was a chain link or splice till I realized that you physically couldn't get a chain on here.
Made of iron and heavy duty, it's stamped L 81 7/16
What is it?

sure looks like a detachable link, maybe for marine use. It seems that a chain link could be put on it if you work one side on as the other side closes.

I have no idea, looks like some kind of cable guide. Based on this I would guess it might be related to farming.

That's a cool find.
I'd say it has to be to connect either cable loops or rope together, but I don't know where to start looking for your answer.

You were right the first time. It's a chain repair link. Can also be used to connect 2 lengths of steel cable (or rope) that have looped ends. Is an old version - not much use for this one anymore.

I never thought about searching under "figure 8 link", a couple come up right away in images. Apparently, it's for stringing utility cable. This is what one of them said [TABLE="width: 100%, align: left"]
