I found this old school foundation from the early 1800s, there are 2 privy foundations, one for boys and one for girls. Im thinking its never been dug because of the tree growing out of it. There is an abandoned road with about 40 foundations from the early settlers of the area. Permission is no problem, the State Troopers are usually the only ones that drive by when im detecting out there, and they always ask what i find and wish me luck in finding more. I did find a couple of early large cents at this site, so im wondering what treasures are in the 2 privys. as you can see its pretty clear whare the privys were. any idea on how deep they would be?

sugestions welcome,
thanks

Any privy I ever sat on was at least 5-6 feet deep, maybe deeper, from the seat. Noodle

Early 1800's? Really?

Best advice I heard is to dig two holes, one for the privy and one right beside it for you to stand in so you don't squash any neat bottles you might find. I think that it was Goodyguy that said that. I may stand corrected.

As far as depth, as far as need be (until the finds run out). 6' plus :dontknow:. And always bring a buddy with a shovel to spell you off, or dig you out.

If you need an extra set of hands, give me a shout. That place looks like it would be worth the 6 hour drive for me haha.

I havent ever seen any building foundations dating past the mid to late 1800's so if you're sure that its that old, i'd be all over that like a fat kid on ice cream!

If you're serious about digging privies though, you should really get a probe and probe it out. Be gentle, and you should be able to determine if there's glass in there or not, and possibly how deep it is.

I hope you have some luck at it, if its that old there may be some super promising stuff in there. Also, don't forget to screen it and detect the leftovers, there could be marbles, coins, and who knows what else in there!

Good luck!!

Well Prolab69, you weren't exactly a 'thinker' in school..but you have come a long way. You are sitting on a virtual gold mine for a variety of reasons. If I lived near you I wouldn't be here on TN right now.

Good Luck
