I found this Saturday on a farm nearby the remains of a foundation. The house wasn't too old as there were red bricks and cinderblocks. It has a patent number on the bottom, but some of the numbers are missing. The underside is threaded as if it were to screw onto something. My father said the old Pontiacs had an Indian Head for the hood ornament. Any ideas? I was hunting in tone only mode because there was so much trash my detector was going crazy.

Thanks,

tb

Cool find! Bricks have been used since the 1800's. dunno bout cinderblocks though. What exactly is this thing made out of?

Thanks for the replies,

Jake I don't know what it's made out of. It's pretty heavy for it's size. Could it be chrome that's lost it's finish over time? It's cracked up and some pieces are missing so it doesn't appear to be a strong metal. It's hard for me to date this site because there's alot of modern trash. I hope to find a coin or two at this site to help date it.

thanks,

tb

The old hood ornaments were typically chrome-plated 'white metal'. I don't remember the hair being that long on the Pontiac head, but maybe from before I would have started paying attention (about 1950). What's the bottom of it look like?

No, poured cement was used much earlier in the 1800's. A poored concrete foundation can date in the 1800's.
