I found this by accident while digging. Pretty cool piece. I think it's quartz. Not sure if it is arrowhead. Looks a little different. Does anyone know what shape I would call this? What is it? I've been looking up artifacts and haven't seen any exactly like this. How can I go about dating it? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Excellent spear point. Quartz is not common.

Super nice point! It's good to see a rock that is actually a point. What area are you in ?

Thanks! I live on the north shore of Long Island in New York. I found it near where the nissequogue river empties into the sound. It wasn't right by the water. Probably about a mile inland in the woods. I was digging up a metal target with my Whites MD and it just came out of the dirt. I couldn't believe it. Lucky. This is my first native artifact so my knowledge is limited. Gotta love metal detecting. I'm learning about meteorites and rocks, old colonial buttons, bullets etc... I never would've researched this stuff on my own. I only found 2 similar points online: guilford round base and Hudson slug. The guilford points are usually in the south so I'm not sure. Still researching Hudson slugs. Back to research. It's not easy to find someone who can tell me exactly what it is. I guess that's part of the fun. Thanks again!

As others said probably a knife, Good eye recognizing that it was an artifact. I live in Maryland and have found 2 very similar to that one. I can post some pics of your interested in seeing them.

Great find. Quartzite is our only common stone on the island.
