Indianhead, 1 FRANC, & a giant "sheepshead" mushroom from old "Trevorton" park

Hello friends, well ya just never know what your gonna dig up when ya go metal detectin', and last night was no exception.

The old "turn of the century" Trevorton park never ceases to amaze me. Last night, I dug up this 1868 Indianhead Penny, and this 1941 1 FRANC coin from France.

Among the other goodies, Jess told me about this giant mushroom that was growing near this big old oak tree and the end of his yard. Its a "sheepshead" or "ramshead" commonly called around these parts, or "Hen of the Woods". Scientific name is "Grifola Fondosa" and O yea, its edible, and some go to 50 pounds. Yummy.

Thanks for looking...............Rich

Nice coins and the sheepshead looks good too! I have found a couple of them this year but nothing close to that big. Normally, I see one every two years or so. I guess all this rain is bringing them out. I have never tried sheepshead. I normally look for what we call milkies "Lactarius volemus" and morels.

Dug one of those French coins a couple years back and thought for sure I had my first gold coin :laughing7:

Good finds......really interested in that mushroom.
My brother buys/sells mushrooms that have been found in the wild, and then sells them to his contacts around the world.
My Dad was mushroom hunting in N.E. Oregon, and found a sheepshead that weighed a little over 50 pounds. He gave it
to my brother......but Dad said he had a heck of a time packing that thing down from where he was "room" hunting.
Good find. yummy.

Mushroom is Grifola frondosa, aka Maitake and better known as "Hen of the Woods." Never heard of sheephead mushrooms before, so that's a new common name for me. That's also why mycologists prefer to use scientific names for fungi. What is called dryland fish in Texas is still a morel in Minnesota, but is a Morchella anywhere in the world.

BTW, Grifola frondosa is known to be a potent anti-cancer fungus. For citations on that subject, see Paul Stamet's "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms."

Grifola frondosa dried very well, and can be stored dried and frozen for years. Good idea to have some on hand, and pretty good eating. Some people are good enough to cultivate this one.
