If you are interested on how a metal detector operates, you will probably enjoy this book.
I am not capable of building a metal detector, but I like to know the science and engineering behind the designs. The book covers the gamut from the history of the metal detectors (people, applications, companies) to a discussion of pulse induction designs. Along the way are discussions of coil types and the construction of an induction balance (IB) metal detector. The reference section is a valuable resource: There are lists of metal detector related websites, books, magazine articles, and patents.
