The late 1800's in America was an interesting time for coinage. We had silver competing with gold from huge mining concerns in California and especially in Nevada. The mint opened up in Carson City and the nickel mining monopolist, Joseph Wharton, was flashing his cash around the House of Representatives to promote nickel coinage. All of this doesn't even start to address paper money, various banknotes and fractional currency. The highlight is the year 1873 when a total of 17 different coins of various denominations were in circulation.
