I found this field hunting artifacts and I'm know shell fossils are common, but this was quite an interesting rock. It is quite hefty in size and the the whole thing is literally a dense fossil clump. The pictures don't really do it justice, but thought I would share anyways. From what I can see from top to bottom is mostly shell, but I wouldn't doubt there being small insects and such inside of it, either way its one of the cooler fossils I've found.

I don't have a very good camera, but a couple of these pics show just how dense it is.

interesting links inyo thanks for sharing. I'm well into the the yellow section (selurian) if refering to that chart, northern cayuga county. Thank you for the info, I just happen to come across this rock in a field and is definitely something I've never come across. :dontknow:

I know where there a nice partial trilobite in Seneca County. We were just up to hike Taughannock Falls a couple weeks ago and I spotted a beautiful 2" long section of what was likely the tail-end of a 6" Phacops.

In a boulder about 4 ft by 6 ft.

Central NY is pretty low on land-based fossils. Lots of marine fauna.
