I found this in Virginia on a CW Battlefield. It had some 1700's houses on the property too. Its made of wrought iron, with a different (maybe higher carbon)adjustable insert.
Approx. 2.5" long and 1/2" wide. Looks like the remnants of a thumbscrew on one end of a C clamp, and the other part is mounted in a slot to allow for adjustment. Also looks like it might be able to swivel on the pin thru the rivet holding the two together. Thought it may have been a flintlock hammer when I dug it up, but electrolysis ruled that out.
