I went out hunting the other day in a wooded area that had a tavern until 1840, when it burned down. I had already searched an area across from the tavern site which had a foundation. I found an 1836 large cent, plated & gilted buttons, a watch key and various other artifacts http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,59770.msg426475.html#msg426475.

Is this an iron of some type, like a griddle iron? it is solid & heavy, tapered, wider on top, narrower on the bottom. I found it in the same hole as the chain and a broken part of something resembling a kettle. What is the best way to clean Iron relics?

Flat piece looks like a broken hoe. Especially if you look at how one side is worn more than the other. Most hoes will be worn on one side more than the other depending on whether the owner is right or left handed. Also the stub at the top looks like where the stem would have been.
