Close!

This is a uniform button from New York's Interborough Rapid Transit Company, which was organized in 1902 and originally leased the elevated lines, or "els," of the Manhattan Railway. Two years later, it also began operating the city's first subway. The IRT Co. was eventually taken over by the city in 1948. According to Donald P. Van Court's book, Transportation Uniform Buttons - Vol. II - Transit, these buttons were introduced in 1906.
