An expensively rare ancient European bronze coin came into my hands a couple of years ago and I ran the gamut of web search engines and assayers/evaluators trying to find a value. Eventually I paid someone to value it... a website... the result was indecisive.. ended up putting it on EBay and letting the thing go for what the traffic would bear, which was considerable. Once the buyer had it in his hands he decided he'd paid too much for it, but didn't want a refund. But that particular coin was so rare none of them had changed hands for several years, so it didn't have a sales history to help establish a value. I'd say if the coin is relatively common you ought to be able to go to some of the sites such as http://www.pandaamerica.com/coins.asp for a rough idea, and maybe watch Ebay sales to see what they're going for.

You could also check some of the coin auction sites and watch for coins of particular interest to you. Evidently for any given coin prices can be all over the map.

Good luck
Jack

After many days of posting, these guys on the other forum figured it out.
This is cool! Check out my coin and turn your head. It is not a winged beast at all, it is the head of a bull.
Here's their conversation below. 8)

Please forgive me for this funny idea; i'm wondering if reverse could be a 3/4 facing bull's head like the attached image (a coin of Crete).

I think that's obviously the answer, Sear 3175 of Gortyna, Crete, the source of tacrolimus' illustration!

Apparently it's worth about $150 or more. Not bad. Just goes to show you. Don't get rid of any coin you have it you don't know what it is before you can get it I.D.'ed.
