Ball button is what I believe they call them.

I believe that they cast them, then drill the hole through the shank.

All of the ball buttons I've found have a wire shank, this is just different and I didn't know if it was a different time period or something else. Thanks for your input.

I believe the drilled ones are early ones. I have a pewter button with a drilled shank, and it looks like the one you have. Someone with more knowledge will come along shortly, and either confirm or refute my assessment.
