Is this a Civil War Relic?

Hi,

I found this thing today that says "US" on it, it looks like a large button a little larger than a quarter and twice as thick, it still has some leather attached to it, I've included a scan of it.? Any help would be appreciated.

probably a rosette on a bridle. i have one that size but it was a two piece. Brent
