No I don't think it's too bad of a deal as long as it works correctly. I've seen better deals and worse. As for a quarters depth you might find one five or six inches.
Garrett no longer makes the GTA350 instead they make the GTAX550, but they probably take the same coils. You can always call them I found that they're very friendly about these type of questions.
According to there new buyer's guide the GTAX550 lists for $499.95 and it has two other coils (1) 10'' x 14'' DD (2) 4.5'' crossfire II

if in proper working shape don't seem like a bad deal---the key phraze being "properly working"---a good working detector for $175 ain't bad in my book---Ivan

For the same money, get a used ACE 250. For just a little bit more, get a NEW ACE 250.

Thanks all for the replies.

Here is an email I got today from garrett :

8 inches deep sounds great ! Can the Ace do that, too?

Steve,

Yes, it has a frequency of 7 Khz. It can detect coins at about 8 inches and a coke can at about 17 inches. Keep in mind that the larger the target, the deeper it can be detected. There are no upgrades for this detector. Here is a list of coils available:

10 x 14 DD coil…………………$179.95

7 x 10 Proformance coil……….$119.95

4.5 Crossfire coil……………….$89.95

If you would like to order, please call the 800# below. Our hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm central time.

Subject: Garrett Ultra GTA 350 model

Hello,

Can you please tell me what coil options I have with my newly purchased (used early 90's?) model GTA Ultra 350?

Are there any upgrades available for this machine?

I paid $175.00 for it with a set of garrett headphones, and was told it originally sold for $350.00 w/o headphones.

I would like to use it extensively in TN, and would like to achieve depths of between 1-14 inches, not 1-3 inches, thank you.

I understand this is a single freq machine @ 7.0 mhz, correct?

Thanks,

time to start hunting---Ivan

Soar,
Here's the deal. The 350 was the bottom of the Garrett GTA series back in the 90's. It is very basic, to be blunt. Is that bad? Well, anytime you can get a quality instrument that works for 175$, its worth consideration.

However, you didn't say that you HAD gotten the machine. If so, then make the best of it. As as Ivan says, get out there and hit it.

If you havent spent the money, then:
1. Stop listening to what someone says they paid for something way back when. What difference does that make, now? It only tells you that they are trying to recoup as much as they can from you.
Listen to your budget, instead. Rule of thumb is 50% of new cost.
2. Give a serious look at the ACE 250. It has all the features of the 350 and then some. It'll do anyting the 350 will do and then some.

#1 ITS YOURS ---you bought
#2 about 50% of new is a good price PROVIDED IT WORKS PROPERLY
#3 it most likely did cost about $350 new---so 50% rule = $175
#4 $175 for a decent working "name brand" machines is not bad----you own it now anyway so be happy already --- take sometime to learn the machine and how to "properly" use it and what its telling you---take your time--- don't get angry with the machine---the machine is your freind---do not beat ,kick,or bash it into a tree in a fit of anger--- take a deep slow breath-----it takes awhile to get good with one---so welcome the world of "dirtoholics" ---oh it will take awhile before you find good stuff normally but as you get better and learn more you tend to find more and better stuff---but your not going to get rich most likely ---its a "hobby" that can turn a buck now and then and once in a very great while a good bit of em---Ivan
