Looks directional Jeff,
Maybe in regard to the shaft direction.
Looks like it goes in so far and then makes a 90 degree right hand turn.

Jeff,
Reminds me of the sign for 'Buried very deep'. That sign uses a circle at the bottom instead of the arrow point. It could still have the same meaning.

Is this a bird with it's wing extended?

Jeff,

There is this... Looks like an upside down anchor J or a T with the bars bent down. Sorry for copying your photo...

Clay

***EDIT *** Just realized it was the same sign from afar. Easier to see from further away I think....

I Havn't done any detecting there yet,
but I'm pretty sure an inch or two
under the ground is solid rock.
must be some ground though because trees and brush.
block it's view from the road.

The cliff the cave is in, is a very high
wall of rock boulders.
to the left is an area that looks like it
should be a cave also but never happened
or was sealed with giant boulders by giants :tongue3:
the whole mountain side there is a rock wall of sorts.
If there are any Artifcts there,
they are lying on shelves above Eye sight
or in between the cracks on the walls

to the upper right; too high & at an angle, there looks
like another cave, but I'm not a rock Climber.
if the weather were cooler, I May have pretended I was & tried,
since I was alone & Nobody could have tried
to talk sense into me. :tongue3:

the creek in front of the cave is also lined with
big slabs of natural rock.
Forgot I wanted to try & scrape the natural
traps between them
& Pan a little.

Most of my pics didn't come out

The cave itself goes back maybe 500 or so feet
I'm not good at guestimating lengths. & The back wall
has the appearnce of being collapsed.
had to walk stooped over once I got back to the dark.
and couldn't tell if I was sharing the cave with
any "Critters"
only had a ZIPPO for light, & couldn't tell
if there was off shoots to the upper
right or left anywhere. & No hard hat,
so was worried about bumping head.

Guess I could have tried to Build a torch,
just thought of that now. :sign13:

somone had a camp/party fire at the entrance

Jeff,

Is there a tailing pile nearby or at the bottom of the cliff? That looks like an iron mine exploration...there are alot of those in Northern NJ/Southern NY..the rust color of the rocks looks exactly like some of the mines and exploration pits I've seen. If thats the case Old Dog's interpretation concerning shaft location(s) would seem pretty logical...

Regards,
bk65

no sign of a tailing pile & No history
of Iron mines in the area.

Only mention of it in the history books
calls it Peewee cave
