Does the back mark looks like this?

The back mark: R. & W. ROBINSON dates: 1836-1848 ish

So... while NOT a military issued button, could have well been worn during the Civil War, or certainly IN the CW by someone... it was common for confederate troopers to use civilian / flower buttons on their uniforms.

Yes it looks like the back mark that you mentioned Montana....... The gold gilt on the front is really nice. It is one of the most detailed and decorative buttons that I have. It was found near Pelham in Westchester, I was hoping for a revolutionary war button.

the button is pre civil war - depending on where it was found it very well could have been used during the war by rebel troops-- since buttons were scarce (they had to be brought from england via blockade runners) the southern troops used whatever buttons they could get their hands on - those older type flower buttons were very popular in the south -----needless to say its hard to prove actual "civil war use" but if found at a camp or battle area where southern troops were at ---- its highly possible indeed that it was used by the rebel troops.---- (if found in a northern area where there were no southern troops --it would be considered a civilian button by most folks ) either way its a great find and is in good shape---Ivan
