Is this a piece of a bugle or just a piece of pipe?

Dug in a 1800s site. Looks like a receiver to a bugle, but has a slit in it and some holes. It is 3 inches long.

There use to be a candle holder that looks a lot like what you have. And the slit on the side was to raise up the candle. Just a wild guess.

I agree ..I was going to suggest that, too, but wanted to verify its diameter.
