I agree, it looks to be a 1/2 real and it appears to be the pillars and globe variety, which would date it to the mid-1700s

Are you guys just joking when you say it is a real?

Your coin is most likely a Spanish 1/2 Real.
Reale is used when referring to more than 1 real coins... Like in 2 reales or 8 reales

Thanks , just had never heard it called that. Learn something new every day.

It definitely looks like the outline of a crown and the pillars of hercules so I'd say yes.

It's not real. Toss it in your junk bag and I'll throw it away for you when I come up again!

Yes it is a real reale. "real" as in genuine, "reale" as in coin type.

It is a Half Real, one with design of the famous "pillar dollar" 8 Reales piece. Your coin was made from around 1732-1771, and is widely considered to be the source of the dollar sign (scroll on the pillar). It was also pretty much the official silver coin of the colonies. The pillar Spanish silver pieces are found much less often than the later Spanish silver pieces with a bust on the obverse. Congrats on that awesome, rare find!
