Any thoughts on this item? Looks like a long Civil War tin cup with a small hinged door at the base. Never seen anything like it before.

I get that feeling too Toecutter. Maybe put hot coals in the base to warm a cup that’s been placed up above?

It certainly has that military surplus vibe going on, maybe for use with Sterno cans??

Well it would have been creskol, but that little hinged door at the base would definitely make it leak.

I guess that would eliminate it from being a coffee pot, drinking cup, or a vessel of any type that would hold liquids.

I could see it being used as a make=shift heater/stove with something like this placed in the bottom and the trap door opened for draft control.

I don't know where this was found or who recovered it. but can you imagine trying to serve a military officer a hot cup of coffee while he, glued to his binoculars, was viewing a battle front and screaming to his adjutant at the top of his lungs!

Only thing Is, how come the soldered joints look so new?

Might just be like that!

Right on! Do a Google image search for ' "civil war" tin camp stove '. You'll see other examples.

I don't think it was specific to coffee, but certainly was used for doing so!
