It was on my “buckle list”

Went hunting today with a buddy at a place I have found 3 seated a largie and some other mid to late 1800’s coins. Was not looking like it was going to be very productive. I found just one memorial and my friend a wheat. Anyway, was digging trash basically expecting the same when I pulled up this US buckle. I seriously doubly this area (park West of Philly) had any civil war action so I’m thinking it was lost years later. Pretty sure it’s pewter. Found in pine forest so the it’s eaten up a bit around the edges. But it’s my first and I happy with it. Good luck out there!

the back is solder not lead although solder has lead in it. pure lead won't flake like that.

Nice. I found my first Civil War era buckle this weekend as well. I live at least 300 miles from the nearest battlefield.

I wonder how long soldiers kept wearing these but I’d imagine a long time. Like even goes to the kids who then lose them. Or they just get discarded at some point. I doubt a yankee like me here in PA will be lucky enough to dig a CSA but one thing I’ve learned if ya never know. For decades I focused on coin like signals and mostly passing the others up. Bad idea. Ever since I started digging the odd signals I have had many really cool unexpected finds.

Appreciate the follow up info about the metal composition.
