It's been a while........

With working and all the crummy weather it has been a while since I have had the chance to put the coil to the soil...but the past couple of evenings after work I still have approximately an hour before dark so I have been in the yard trying to tweak the Ol' Explorer in prepration for better weather. Last night was a couple of memorials and a couple of wheat's....then tonight I hit another couple of memorials.....then as I was about to call it an evening I hit a faint tone which by my ferrous and conduct could maybe be an IH so I proceded to dig. The following token was dug at 8" but at the time I still thought it was a penny of some kind. I run a little water over it after getting inside and to my surprise I had a "Pittsburgh Railways Co. GOOD FOR ONE FARE Token". Its dated 1922 and really makes me wonder where it came from as we have had this property for probably 60 plus years. Ya just never Know.......thanks for looking.....HH all................gregd573

Nice finds,

I find those alot here in pittsburgh were I live. They are common to find. The railways around here were huge. Alot of folks road the street car.

Actually I just dug one. Check my last post on this page. You will see it.

Re: It's been a while........

Thanks all for the replys......sure glad to hear your out again Nana.

Hey JerDfx....thats to cool, you also found one of those tokens. I looked at some for sale on e-bay and the range was from .99 to 8.99...there were 5 for sale. Strange thing ( I thought) was they were all 1922. Do you know......was this more of a street car type thing or a surenuff railroad cross country thing and was it only in business for the one year or just had tokens for one year?

Thanks again all for checking in......HH.......gregd573

Re: It's been a while........

Found one of those also; not sure if 1922 is date they were made, or if it means something else. Everyone I've seen posted has that number on it. I also found a Pittsburgh Railways uniform button.

Im not sure this will help but I found this little bit of info on Ebay ... (You could email this guy and ask him about more info on the token).

If you’ve got any interesting, unusual or rare Pittsburgh area tokens that you’re not planning to post on eBay, I’d welcome the opportunity to correspond with you about them. And if you are planning on posting any such tokens, I’d also like to hear about it so that I can get in on the action.

I’m also a member of the Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization (PATCO) and help out with the newsletter from time to time. If you’re interested in the club, just send me an email and I’ll tell you more about it.

Tip for new collectors, courtesy of your friends at PATCO: Those 1922 Pittsburgh Railways Co. streetcar tokens that are consistently posted on eBay have not increased in value since the day they were issued. These fare tokens were purchased for a nickel each back in 1922 and are not worth much more than that today."
