It's Silver...

...confirmed this morning! Went down to the coin shop first thing after dropping my daughter off at school this morning. I wanted to have the small piece of what I thought could be silver tested. Well, they tested it twice and it came up as silver both times. I was pretty happy to hear and see that it's the real deal. It weighed out at just under a gram - obviously not worth much but it's silver none-the-less. It's definitely my "best find" to date.
Here's the original post when I found it - http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,181403.0.html

Any way to clean it up & make a nice nugget necklace for the Princess of Izzy ...

Rock On ~ Nick

Not real sure how I'd clean it Nick. The little bit of dirt still embedded in it is really "on there". I'm thinking maybe a toothbrush? Would it be safe to clean it with steam(?) - I've seen that done with gold. I'm open to suggestions.

Re: It's Silver...

Very cool! I need to get a metal tested it seems. Did they have to scratch it, or did they have some other method of testing?

They rubbed the piece against a black stone(?) and then placed drops of two different chemicals on it. The rubbing left a small (I mean tiny) area that looks "buffed".

Re: It's Silver...

That is totally cool.

What an original find! Great job DD  Great post. Always great to see your posts.

Cool find! Something you don't find every day. WTG

I would try some electrolysis treatment on the piece to clean it...

Re: It's Silver...

Thanks everyone! Tomorrow I'll attempt to clean it up and post some pics. I'll be taking Nick's suggestion on this - it'll be made into a charm for my daughter's necklace. Keep on swingin'... :icon_pirat:

Thanks Brother - at this stage in my "learning" - I will dig everything I hear. I'm definitely getting more comfortable with the "Pappa G Turbo 'Tector" :D. I even have my pinpointing down to a science - locate target, dig a hole three feet in diameter... (that B.A.D. diggin' tool comes in handy!) :D just messin'. Actually, I do have a pretty good bead on the whole pinpointing process with the BH. I just need to get to some "cleaner" ground...

Re: It's Silver...

I have a piece of quartz with a string of raw silver running through it that I picked up on C Street in Virginia City, Nevada a few years ago. They filled and macadanized the city streets in the late 1800's with tailings and low grade ore. This is a decent example of what the Comstock ore looks like.

Did you notice what color it changed to?

Wow! Cool to find silver in its natural state. :)

I agree with AG.

That is a very neat find. Finding silver jewelry is great, but a a natural piece of silver is WAY cool. :icon_king:
It sure beats lead too! ;D
Congrats Big Guy.
